My Totems
They somehow carry a message of my totems. Itâs amazing. They all seem to give me a blessing. My tribe did the reversal of the Trail of Tears from Siletz, Oregon, down the coast to Gold Beach, thirty miles up the mountain to Agnes. I was up there in my car. I was the oldest grandmother there to greet the runners. They called me way down, ten miles down, and said they were needing prayers. So, word came up for me to pray, and I said, âIâll pray.â I got out of my car, and I stood out and prayed and sent energy to the runners. I said, âGrandfather, you take care of the runners. They got good legs. I wish I could do that. I would be there with them. So, you take care of them and let them come on in and help them.â I did quite a lengthy prayer for them, got back in my car, and drove back up to where theyâre going to come up. I was sittinâ there when they all got there, and I was the first elder to greet the runners.
This is the first time they did the run in reverse of the Trail of Tears of my people up there. When they did it, I was behind them, and I thought I better not crowd them because they were going down under a little knoll, down under the trees, where they had tables set up for them to eat. So, I thought, I will just pull off here and wait till they get down there, then I will drive down. I pulled up and shut off the key, and I looked up in my windshield, and my mouth flew open like a hippo. It was all covered in dragonflies. I put my head down on the steering wheel and cried and thanked the Creator. âThank you, bless you, bless you for my people and what theyâre doing. Touch them and help them.â I was praying, âThank you, beloved Creator, for the messengers, that weâre doing the right thing for our people that have gone on, and that you have them up there. Let them know that we feel honored for them sending the messengers, the dragonflies, to show that they are watching and that they are aware of what we have done, our people here, in honor to the ancient ones.â I never saw anything like it. Itâs a phenomenal thing. I felt really good to be able to tell that story to all of them down there when we had lunch.
I got an iron dragonfly door knocker. Iâve got them all around my picture frames, in my pillows, in my socks, in my aprons, in my purses, in my jewelry, hanging from my trees, everywhere in my house. Thereâs many things about how the dragonfly has been in my life and what it means. Itâs everywhere, and itâs phenomenal how itâs come; my people said when they died and went to the Star Nation, they came back as dragonflies.
